1. Purpose
Helen Ward Therapy is committed to providing safe, ethical and effective counselling and psychotherapy. Clinical supervision is an essential component of professional practice and supports the delivery of competent, reflective and accountable therapeutic services.
This policy sets out how clinical supervision contributes to client safety, professional development, ethical decision-making and continuous improvement.
2. Scope
This policy applies to all therapeutic work undertaken by Helen Ward Therapy, including:

face-to-face therapy;

online therapy;

telephone therapy;

assessment sessions;

clinical decision-making;

safeguarding matters;

ethical dilemmas;

professional development.

3. Legal and Professional Framework
This policy has been developed with reference to:

Clinical supervision is recognised as an integral part of safe and ethical practice and is not limited to situations where concerns arise.
5. Purpose of Clinical Supervision
Clinical supervision supports:

safeguarding decision-making;

practitioner wellbeing;

continuing professional development.
Supervision provides an opportunity to reflect upon therapeutic work, consider alternative perspectives, identify potential risks and enhance the quality of clinical practice.
6. Frequency of Supervision
Helen Ward Therapy will engage in supervision at a frequency appropriate to professional requirements, the volume and complexity of clinical work and the expectations of the relevant professional body.
Additional supervision or consultation may be sought where:

safeguarding concerns arise;

significant clinical risk is identified;
-
complex ethical issues emerge;
-
unusually challenging clinical work is undertaken;
-
professional judgement indicates that additional consultation would support safe practice.

7. Confidentiality
Client confidentiality remains fundamental throughout the supervision process.
Only the minimum information necessary to support effective supervision will be shared.
Wherever reasonably practicable:

identifying information will be minimised;

unnecessary personal information will not be disclosed;

client anonymity will be preserved where possible.

Clinical supervisors are themselves bound by professional and ethical duties of confidentiality.
Clients are informed through the Client Contract and Confidentiality Policy that aspects of their therapeutic work may be discussed anonymously within professional supervision for the purposes of maintaining safe and effective practice.

Information discussed within supervision may include:

Only information relevant to the supervisory purpose will be shared.
9. Safeguarding and Risk
Clinical supervision plays an important role in supporting decision-making regarding:

Where immediate safeguarding action is required, action will not be delayed solely in order to seek supervision.

Responsibility for clinical decisions remains with Helen Ward.
Clinical supervision provides consultation, reflection and professional support but does not transfer legal or professional responsibility for decisions made in practice.
11. Record Keeping
Records of supervision will be maintained where appropriate.
Such records may include:

reflections relevant to safe practice.

Supervision records are professional records and are maintained separately from client clinical records.
12. Professional Development
Learning arising from supervision may inform:

Where appropriate, learning will be incorporated into future practice.
13. Responsibilities
Helen Ward is responsible for:

maintaining appropriate supervision arrangements;

maintaining client confidentiality during supervision;

seeking additional consultation where necessary.

14. Review of Clinical Practice
Clinical supervision provides an opportunity to review:

treatment planning;

risk management;

professional boundaries;
-
ethical practice;
-
practitioner wellbeing.

Where supervision identifies that another practitioner or service would better meet a client's needs, referral options will be considered in the client's best interests.
15. Policy Review
This policy will be reviewed annually or sooner where there are changes to legislation, professional guidance or professional requirements.
